JCD, Sramik Dal men held for beating up cops

Police yesterday arrested a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader and a Sramik Dal leader for beating up cops and attempting to loot a rifle from the police on duty at a Sonali Bank branch in the town.The arrestees are Firoz Ahmed, assistant general secretary of JCD Bogra city unit, and Rezaul Karim Arun, publicity secretary of Sramik Dal district unit. The incident occurred when Firoz and Rezaul parked their motorbikes on the premises of Sonali Bank, corporate branch, in Jaleswaritola area of the town at 1:15pm. The cops requested the two not to park their bikes at that place, as it is close to the vault. But they did not pay heed to the request and left the area, leaving their vehicles on the bank premises. The cops then filed a general diary with the local police, who took the motorbike to police station. Firoz and Rezaul returned to take their bikes at 3:00pm and became furious after they learned that police took away their bikes. Both left the place and came back immediately along with 15 youths. They beat up the cops, leaving Havilder Saiful Azad and Constable Mahmudul Islam seriously injured. They snatched a rifle from Havilder Saiful and tried to run away, but were caught by locals and other guards. They admitted to beating up the cops but denied their attempt to loot the rifle. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (SP) Matiur Rahman Sheikh told the press that there was an incident of beating up cops, but no attempt of rifle looting was reported. He said a case will be lodged after an investigation.
