Criminals strangled a retired official of Bangladesh Navy inside his house at Uttara in the capital early yesterday while a security guard of a house in Mohammadpur was slaughtered.

Police, who recovered the body of Lt Commander (rtd) Syed Moyeeinuddin Ahmed, 73, yesterday morning, found its hands and legs tied and blood oozing from the mouth where garment jhut (by-products) had been pushed into.

The retired Navy officer lived alone on the ground floor apartment of his two-storey building and the killers entered his bedroom sometime between 12 midnight and 4:30am breaking open window grill of the house at Sector 10, police and caretaker of the house said.

Moyeeinuddin's son Major Syed Muzakkir Ahmed said his father might be killed as a sequel to a feud that followed his involvement in social activities in the area. The criminals also took away gold ornaments worth around Tk 1 lakh, he said.

Moyeeinuddin, who was the vice-president of Sector10 Welfare Society, restricted plying of trucks from Ashulia to Uttara through the streets of Sector 10, which infuriated some truck owners, said caretaker of the house Raibul Islam.

Following the move, criminals from nearby Rana Bhola area came to his house over a month back and threatened him of dire consequences, he said, adding that a jhut trader of the area was also angry with him as he restricted such business in the residential area.

Unknown criminals slaughtered security guard Mujibur Rahman, 40, sometime between 12:30am to 4:00am yesterday when he was alone in his room at a house on Babar Road in Mohammadpur.

Police recovered the body in the morning.
