A Dhaka court yesterday adjourned the hearing of the case filed against lawmaker Maulana Fazlul Haque Amini, chairman of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), in connection with threatening Proshika President Qazi Faruque Ahmed.Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shafique Anwar adjourned the hearing following a time petition by the prosecution lawyers. After the hearing, the court also directed both the accused Amini and complainant of the case Qazi Faruque to appear before it on September 14. The court will close cross-examination of witnesses if the prosecution fails to produce witness. Faruque's defence lawyers submitted a petition seeking time as their vital witness who covered the news regarding threats on their client at the meeting, did not appear before the court yesterday. Faruque was present in the court yesterday while Amini was absent from it. Earlier, the court had recorded statements of seven witnesses since the charges were framed against Amini on January 11, 2001. Amini at a meeting in Brahmanbaria on April 19, 2000 said Faruque and employees of the Proshika would be killed on that very night. The report was first published in the Dainik Bhorer Kagoj on April 20. Later, it was also published in other newspapers. Amini did not contradict the news or defend himself. Faruque filed a case with the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate against Amini on May 14, 2000. Following the hearing, the court summoned the accused but he failed to show up. The court issued arrest warrant against Amini on July 2 the same year. Amini appeared before the court and obtained bail the next day. Advocates Syed Rezaur Rahman, Khondaker Abdul Mannan, Moklesur Rahman Badal and Aksir M Chowdhury appeared for the complainant while Advocate Sheikh Rezaul Karim defended the accused.
