Housewife burnt to death for dowry

After a three-day struggle with her burn injuries, Swapna Begum, 28, finally gave in yesterday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday.

The housewife from Kutubpur under Bajitpur in Kishoreganj was allegedly set on fire by her husband for dowry.

Her family members said Swapna and her husband Muhammad Bulbul, a shoemaker, engaged in a row over Bulbul's demand for dowry on Friday night.

At one point during the scuffle, Bulbul along with some of his relatives poured kerosene on her and torched her.

Swapna was rushed to Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital at Bajitpur and later transferred to DMCH on Saturday.

Hospital sources said 95 per cent of the victim's body was found burnt.

Swapna's brother Nadim Mia said she had been married to Bulbul for five years and they had two children. Bulbul has been demanding different amounts of money for the last two years and Swapna's family gave him Tk 25000 last year.

Bulbul turned very aggressive over the last two months and has been pressurising Swapna for more money, Nadim added.

Swapna's uncle Amru Mia filed a case at Bajitpur Police Station against Swapna's husband along with a few others.
