'Govt to expand UP chairmen activities'

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan yesterday said that the present government has taken many initiatives to consolidate responsibilities and expand areas of activities of union parishad (UP) chairmen."Over 80 per cent people are living in the rural areas, where UPs have been playing an important role in developing rural infrastructure," he said while distributing local government awards among the best chairmen of the UPs. With Local Government Division Secretary S M Zaharul Islam in the chair, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Zia-ul-Haque Zia was present at the function as the special guest. Mir Enayet Hossain Montu, Nargis Khondaker and Abul Haris of the Bangladesh Union Parishad Chairman Samity also spoke on the occasion. Best awards and certificates were distributed among 74 out of 4,488 UP chairmen across the country.
