Photography Exhibition
Through the lens with eminent artistes

On the occasion of World Photography Day, photography club Deepro organised a rally, discussion and an exhibition of still photography on August 19 at DOTS, Contemporary Art Centre.

Eminent photographers Dr Nawajish Ahmed, Sayeeda Khanam, Golam Mostafa and Rafiqul Islam were the main discussants at the event.

The participants stressed on the need for unity among photographers. Rafiqul Islam said "We need to forget about our petty differences and be united in order to take photography to a higher pedestal." Bangladesh's first woman photographer Sayeeda Khanam urged the younger generation of women to come forward and take up the challenge of modern photography. She elucidated that if she could break the traditional norms way back in the 50s, the younger generation today have far more opportunities and they should not be intimidated from entering the field.

Golam Mustafa told the audience that photography was one of the three main components required for survival, along with swimming and computers. "At some stage in their life, people will have to know how to take pictures to capture life and one's memories," he asserted.

The event ended with a photography exhibition by the renowned photographer Dr Nawajish Ahmed. He took the audience through a slide show, of 180 of his photographs, titled Dhanshiri noditir pashe (next to the Dhanshiri River) which were inspired by Jibanananda Das's poems. Along with the slide show seven of Jibanananda Das's poems were recited as well.

He told the audience that to him the camera is not the main thing, rather creation is the priority. That is exactly what was captured through his lens as the pictures depicted the minutest details of the poem that was being read in the background. The audience went through the pictures as if they were there in real life, feeling and enjoying the simplicity of rustic life that Das so romantically described.
