Bigots block roads to stop setting up of digital screen

Bigots yesterday blockaded the busy Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue for over 15 minutes protesting the installation of an advertisement screen adjacent to a mosque, that created a traffic tailback stretching up to Uttara. At around 2:00pm, about 150 zealots from the Karwan Bazar Ambar Shah mosque and madrasa came down to the street chanting slogans against the construction of a television screen, saying that 'it was a conspiracy to attack Islam.' The officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Police Station desperately tried to convince the demonstrators to stage their protest elsewhere, but they refused to leave. "We shall not tolerate any television screen near our mosque and madrasa, we shall resist it at any cost," said Abdul Qaiyum, who identified himself as the cashier of the madrasa. Lutfur Rahman, another protester said that they had filed a complaint with the Tejgaon police earlier this month asking them to stop the construction along their perimetre fence. When asked whether they were aware that they were causing suffering to thousands of people stuck on one of the busiest streets in Dhaka, the protesters said that they blockaded the road so that the authorities listen to their demand.
