Absorption Rule
Govt teachers against amendment

Teachers of government colleges under the banner 'BCS General Education Association' yesterday observed a sit-in-programme in front of the Shikkha Bhaban in the city protesting a move to amend the Absorption Rules 2000.

They also submitted a memorandum to the prime minister and held a protest rally in front of Shikkha Bhaban to press their eight-point demand.

Leaders of Bangladesh Civil Service General (BCS) Education Association alleged that cadre teachers, who are recruited through PSC, will face trouble if the absorption rules are amended.

The government formulated the Absorption Rules 2000 to bring the non-cadre teachers of government colleges under a common government rule. Education ministry has already sent the amendment absorption rule to the establishment ministry.

"Government has turned some non-government colleges into government colleges where all of the teachers were adopted. Most of the adopted teachers will be senior to the teachers who were recruited through PSC if the amendment rule is passed," said Prof Iftekhar Ahmed Khan, president of the association, while addressing the rally.

Masum Rabbani Khan, secretary general of the association, said promotion of around 10000 BCS teachers will be interrupted if the government passes the rule.

Government should recruit the adopted teachers through PSC, he added.

Meanwhile the association also announced a series of agitation programmes.

They will form a human chain in front of their colleges across the country on August 28 and observe work abstention from September 2 to 7 to press their demands.
