Fazil, Kamil getting degree, master's status
Cabinet Committee recommendations finalised

The cabinet committee on madrasa education yesterday finalised its recommendations for upgrading Fazil and Kamil degrees of madrasas to degree and master's levels.The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee held with its chief LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan in the chair. The committee recommended giving the three-year Fazil course a status equivalent to the degree level. As per the recommendation, the total marks of the course will be 1,400 including 600 for Arabic subjects and 800 marks for general subjects. In the general subjects, Bangla and English with 200 marks will be compulsory and the rest 600 marks will be for two optional subjects. The Fazil degree will be called as BA (Fazil) and the Kamil degree with 500 marks for Arabic subjects as MA (Kamil). The cabinet committee has recommended introducing the courses under the National University from the 2007-08 academic year. It also recommended separate campus, infrastructure facilities, and efficient teaching staff for these courses. Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Industries Minister Motiur Rahman Nizami, Education Minister Dr M Osman Farruk, Water Resources and Commerce Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Cabinet Secretary Abdul Halim and Education Secretary Momtajul Islam attended the meeting.
