JS Body Meet
BNP lawmakers blast foreign ministry
Staff Correspondent
BNP lawmakers yesterday blasted the foreign ministry for the slow pace in implementing the recommendations made by a parliamentary body. They claimed the recommendations must be implemented for the sake of the country's interests and its foreign policy. Irked by the non-implementation of its recommendations, the parliamentary standing committee on foreign ministry decided to sit again on September 5 to discuss the issue. During the last 21 meetings, it made dozens of recommendations on defusing the border tensions, strengthening the look-east policy, implementation of the UN clause on establishing claim on maritime boundary and strengthening foreign missions. "None of the recommendations has been implemented in the last four years. It is a huge wastage of time and energy due to the ministry's indifference to the committee's recommendations," sources said quoting BNP lawmaker Lt Gen (retd.) Mahbubur Rahman in the meeting. Another BNP lawmaker, Naser Rahman, started inquiring about the implementation status of the recommendations one after another. But he did not find even a recommendation that had been implemented, sources said. "The ministry could not implement the recommendations. It will need more time to examine each of the recommendations made by the committee," Naser observed. BNP lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman said the ministry has failed to meet the public expectations about foreign affairs. In absence of the foreign minister, senior officials of the ministry however defended the ministry and said the ministry is implementing the committee's recommendations. But implementation of a few recommendations is related with a number of other ministries, they said.
