Rab man jailed for hijacking covered van

A special court yesterday handed down a seven-year imprisonment to a member of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) for hijacking a covered van with some of his accomplices on July 12.

The special court headed by Additional Director General of Rab Col Mahbub Alam Mollah pronounced the verdict after the charges brought against Corporal Bazlur Rashid of Rab-10 were proved.

A Rab press release yesterday said that the court was constituted as per the Rapid Action Battalion (court system and departmental proceedings) Rules, 2005 at the Rab Headquarters after a Rab investigation found evidence of Bazlur Rashid's involvement in the hijacking.

Demra police arrested Bazlur Rashid, retired army sergeant Shaheen and five others on July 14 and 15 over hijacking and looting charges.

The criminals including Bazlur posing as Rab members hijacked the van loaded with 26 air-conditioners worth around Tk 39 lakh and fabrics worth around Tk 34 lakh at Rayerbagh in Demra at about 6:00am on July 12. Bazlur was wearing a Rab jacket during the crime.
