Peacekeepers laid to rest


The six Bangladeshi peacekeepers, killed in a road accident in Ivory Coast, were buried with full military honour at their family graveyards yesterday.

Earlier in the morning, the namaj-e-janaza of the peacekeepers was held at the Army Stadium in Dhaka.

Ministers, MPs, Military Secretary to the President Maj Gen M Aminul Karim, Military Secretary to the Prime Minister Brig Gen AMM Wazed Thakur, Army Chief Lt Gen Moeen U Ahmed, Navy Chief Rear Admiral M Hasan Ali Khan, Assistant Air Chief (Operation and Training) Commodore SM Ziaur Rahman on behalf of the air force chief, Defence Secretary Abu M Moniruzzaman Khan, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Force Maj Gen M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and high civil and military officials attended the namaj-e-janaza.

After the janaza, president's military secretary on behalf of the president, prime minister's military secretary on behalf of the prime minister, the army and navy chiefs and the assistant air chief (Operation & Training) placed wreaths on the coffins.

Later, the bodies of five peacekeepers were sent to their respective village homes by four helicopters while that of solder Mohammad Quamruzzaman by road for burial.

The six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and 12 others injured in a road accident at Tiasali on their way to Abidjan from Yamoussoukro in Ivory Coast on August 25.
