The fans were celebrating their team's 3-1 win over bitter rivals Paris St Germain on Sunday as they made their way home.

But their bus driver could not tolerate the behaviour of the 50 fans and dumped them at a train station at Villefranche-sur-Saone, near Lyon and around 300km from Marseille.

It was the second stop for the fans who faced a nightmare homeward journey that took almost a day.

They had not left the capital until around 1am but their first bus was involved in a minor accident on the A6 motorway at Macon, 60km north of Lyon, and the Marseille fans had to wait by the side of the road for several hours before another bus, hired by Marseille, arrived to take them home.

But now it was the middle of the day following the evening match but the second part of the journey did not last long before the second bus driver ordered the fans off his vehicle.

Faced with some angry football supporters, a dozen police arrived at the Villefranche-sur-Saone train station to keep a close watch over proceedings before a third bus, with a third different driver, arrived to take the fans home.

They arrived almost a full 24 hours after the match between PSG and Marseille had been played.

It is not clear whether or not the second driver was a PSG fan.
