Films to inspire children
Fun and frolic on the screen

CHILDREN'S Film Society, Bangladesh had a programme of films at the Goethe Institut on 10th September. Films for children were also shown at the same premises on the 11th and the 12th.Monira Morshed, the Secretary of the society, speaking at the function said that despite drawbacks they hope to make a success of the programme. She said that children ranging from 6 to 16 were invited to send in their films and that there would be four awards for the films. She mentioned that Arjo Shreshto had made three films, many of which won awards in Europe. Professor Anisuzaman, the chief guest, said that he believes that the film society's project would be a success. Mustafa Manwar said that it is admirable that children from our country can express themselves so well though films. He felt that children should enjoy themselves and do more creative work than just cramming school books. With cameras and paint brushes in their hands the children can now dream freely. Noted writer Zafar Iqbal said that the occasion was a great one as it brought together films for and by children. Children seeing the films will develop curious minds and learn to question and find new elements in life. Arjo Shrestro, mentioned that Mustafa Manwar had guided him, as did his parents, and that he wanted to go beyond his three films, and win more awards overseas. Morshedul Islam said that the film was a powerful media and can guide children well, if the films are selected carefully. The films shown that evening included a five minute film from Brazil directed by Cao Hamburger. It was called The boy from the slum and the pan lid. The second one was a 15 minutes film,Ek Akash, directed by Sudhkar Reddy from India This dealt with two striving boys, flying kites, who eventually end up being friends. The last one, which went down very well with the child viewers was The Kid of 68 minutes, directed by and starring Charles Chaplin from USA. Chaplin's film was about a beautiful actress who abandons her baby which is rescued by a vagabond, Chaplin. Eventually, after quite a few adventures, the baby, who is now five, is claimed by the mother. The other films shown the following evenings were Children of Heaven directed by Majid Majidi of Iran, Not one less directed by Zhang Yimou of China, Badal Rahman's Emiler goenda bahini and Morshedul Islam's Dipu number 2.
