Two rival groups of ruling BNP of Baralekha upazila in Moulvibazar locked in a fierce clash at Baralekha Bazar yesterday, leaving at least 20 people injured. Seven of the 20 injured were admitted to upazila health complex. The clash erupted around 8:45pm following a feud over which group would organise the programmes during the prime minister's visit to the upazila today. Prime Minister (PM) Khaleda Zia is supposed to lay the foundation stones of several development projects and inaugurate a number of completed ones in the upazila. The PM is also scheduled to address a public meeting at the Baralekha PC High School ground. Tension was running high between the two groups of the upazila BNP as they brought out separate processions in different parts of the upazila. Of the two upazila BNP committees, one is backed by local lawmaker Ebadur Rahman Chowdhury and the other by district BNP President M Naser Rahman MP. The committees locked in a feud over organising programmes during Khaleda's visit to the upazila. Ebadur claimed that his committee was recognised by the BNP central committee and committee president Abdul Hafiz would preside over the public meeting today. Moulvibazar BNP formed the other committee for the upazila on February 12 but BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan approved the Ebadur-backed committee formed on February 18. On April 20, the BNP central committee in a letter to the Moulvibazar BNP dissolved the Naser-backed committee and issued a show-cause notice to its president and general secretary. However, the defunct committee is still operational and has set up its own office.
