BoI chief takes 'save image' vow again

Energy Adviser and Board of Investment (BoI) Executive Chairman Mahmudur Rahman yesterday reiterated his vow to resist those who have 'distorted' the progressive image of the country.He also pledged to start a countrywide campaign to counter the "anti-state propaganda" being carried out by certain quarters. Rahman was speaking at a seminar titled "Sangsadiya Ganatantra-Nirbachon" by Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club. Terming the defamation case filed against the five eminent citizens of the country recently a 'personal war' against those who have tarnished his image and that of the country by undermining the nation's economic development, the BoI chief pledged to resist the 'anti-development quarter' legally. On August 9, a Dhaka court issued arrest warrants against Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Chairman Prof Rehman Sobhan, its Executive Director Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, CPD trustee board members -- former adviser to caretaker government Syed Manzur Elahi, former finance minister M Syeduzzaman and former president of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Laila Rahman Kabir following the defamation suit filed by Rahman. Apart from upholding the coalition government's achievement, his brief speech concentrated on criticising the opposition and a special 'quarter' enjoying the 'media monopoly.' Rahman branded the opposition demand for electoral reforms as an evil attempt to create constitutional crisis, adding that the chronicles started when some people raised the issue of minority repression just after the four-party alliance victory in the last general elections. He also said that an all-out support will be given to the caretaker government to perform its duties. Those who get frequent media coverage will also be knocked down, he asserted. BMA President Prof MA Hadi, convenor of the White Panel in Dhaka University (DU) Prof Aminur Rahman Mojumdar, Parishad Secretary General Prof AZM Jahid Hossain, journalist Ruhul Amin Gazi and BFUJ President Mozammel Haque spoke on the occasion. Prof Dr Mahbubullah of Development Studies Department, DU presented the keynote speech.
