'Implement new organisational structure at Birdem'

Around 250 officials and doctors of Birdem Hospital yesterday demanded implementation of a new organisational structure at the hospital.

At an emergency meeting of the Birdem Officers' Welfare Association, they protested mismanagement in the hospital and demanded that a fair audit be carried out to detect corruption and irregularities.

The meeting criticised the role of the general secretary of Bangladesh Diabetic Samity that runs the hospital affairs, saying that he has been delaying the implementation of a new organisational structure on various pretexts.

They said the Birdem Service Rules were framed in 1992 with an aim to regularise all officials and employees, but the authorities amended the rules in 1996 and started recruiting people on contract.

To stop such employment practices, which gave rise to corruption and severe irregularities, the doctors and officers in collaboration with top management framed the new organisational structure, they said.

The doctors also demanded abolition of contractual appointments.

President of Birdem Officers' Welfare Association Prof Mir Nazrul Islam and General Secretary Imrul Ahmed were present in the meeting.
