Renaming
Marine science students stage demonstration

Students of Institute of Marine Sciences of Chittagong University (CU) staged a demonstration and locked the entrance of their Institute yesterday for four hours demanding implementation of renaming the Institute.

Angry students broke the Institute's nameplate, set fire to tires and boycotted scheduled classes and examinations to press their demand, sources said.

Later, they withdrew their agitation programme and opened the entrance at around 2:00pm when the Institute authorities assured them of taking immediate steps in this regard.

Marine students have long been agitating demanding renaming of the Institute as Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries. The CU Syndicate approved their demand in its 432nd meeting on May 13 this year but now it awaits formal approvals from the CU Senate and University Grant Commission (UGC).
