'Conventional Abstract': Solo painting exhibition by Abdus Salam

Abstract form is a popular genre in the post Liberation Bangladeshi art. Though Abdus Salam is a printmaker, this is for the first time he is exhibiting painting of abstract form titled "Conventional Abstract". The fortnight-long exhibition is going on at the DOTS centre, which will end on September 30.

Six watercolour and 40 acrylic on canvas are on display.

Like the title of the exhibition, the compositions and theme of Salam's canvases are conventional. However, the presentation is unique in the sense that he has not portrayed a realistic picture of the urban life or flora and fauna. Using different shades of bright colours such as red, yellow, green, blue, black; Salam has created harmonious and serene pictures of urban life and landscape, which is seldom present in practical life.

If we analyse Salam's earlier popular projects such as 'Recreating Cinema Posters' and Printmaking on Dry-point, we find he is basically a satirist. But, morbidity is not his intention, neither is he struck by despair, rather opts for a better tomorrow.

In the current painting exhibition also Salam's intention is to create a better future in the urban life. Through the abstract form, Salam has imagined cityscape full of fauna and flora, fountains, blue sky, moon and stars. In fact, Salam in the 'Conventional Abstract' has created a utopian urban life with no despair.
