Vieira ban upheld

Inter Milan's appeal against the three-match Serie A ban given to their French midfielder Patrick Vieira has failed, the Italian football league's disciplinary council said Thursday.

The France international was sent off against Roma last week for receiving two yellow cards, an offence which normally carries a lighter sentence.

But Vieira's punishment was harsher because he used abusive language towards the referee who ordered him off, the disciplinary council said after reviewing television evidence.

Vieira missed Inter's 2-0 Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich on Wednesday as he was serving a one-match European ban for the red card he received against Sporting Lisbon in their opening Group B match.
