Bayern exact German revenge

Bayern Munich manager Felix Magath said his team's 2-0 Champions League victory over Inter Milan on Wednesday had been a triumph for the whole of Germany after poor recent results on Italian soil. Two goals in the final nine minutes from Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro and substitute Lukas Podolski secured three vital points for Bayern who top group B with a perfect six points. "This victory is good for Germans. Recently it has hurt us just going out to eat Italian food," Magath said. "Now we can go out again and get a sizeable pizza for our main course." Magath's comments refer to Germany's recent failings against Italian opposition with the national team crushed 4-1 by Italy in Florence back in March and then eliminated 2-0 in the World Cup semifinal. Last season Bayern also lost 4-1 to AC Milan in the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie as they crashed out 5-2 on aggregate. The win over Inter, who were reduced to nine men, was Bayern's first win over Italian opposition since 1989 when they defeated Inter 3-1 in the UEFA Cup. "It is the first time in a while that we have beaten a top team away from home and that is importance for confidence," said Bayern captain Oliver Kahn, who made his 100th Champions League appearance. "I think it was a good tactical performance. We kept it tight at the back and took our chances when they came along." Bayern had looked out of sorts going into the Inter match but Magath hailed his team and said they were now in the box-seat for qualification. "I knew that this team would show their true colours in the Champions League," Magath said. "We controlled the game well although we were not obliged to make the running. I would have been happy with a point but now we have all the trump cards." Inter had Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic sent off on the hour for two bookable offences and Italian international Fabio Grosso dismissed late on for an elbow on Willy Sagnol-- prompting Magath to criticise the Italians for unsportsmanship. "The way Inter played was not on -- there were a lot of malicious incidents," Magath added. But Bayern had the last laugh and Inter now have a mountain to climb after two straight defeats in Europe.
