Record prize money for Aussie Open

A record prize money pool of 20 million dollars (15 million US) will be on offer for next year's Australian Open, Tennis Australia said here Tuesday.

The winners of the men's and women's singles will collect 1.28 million dollars (960,000 US) each, the organisers said.

The first tennis Grand Slam of 2007, which takes place from January 15-28 at Melbourne Park, is expected to attract more than 500 of the world's top players.

The last Australian Open drew a record 550,550 fans -- the seventh successive year it broke the half-million spectators' mark, Tournament Director Craig Tiley said at the event's launch Tuesday.
