German woes worsen

Germany coach Joachim Loew was hit with another defensive problem on Monday as he prepared for two matches in the next 10 days when Borussia Moenchengladbach left back Marcell Jansen was ruled out with a knee injury.

Loew has already had to make do without his World Cup centre backs Per Mertesacker and Christoph Metzelder as well as their reserves Jens Nowotny and Robert Huth. Loew may again move right back Arne Friedrich to the centre where he performed well recently.

Germany host Georgia in a friendly on Saturday in Rostock before playing their third Euro 2008 qualifier away to Slovakia in Bratislavia on Oct. 11.

'There will be a few players who will get a chance to prove themselves - also the newcomers,' Loew said. 'The important match is in Bratislava. We've got to be top fit for that and go to our limits. The Georgia match is for experimenting.'

Loew has already called up three untried players: Hamburg SV playmaker Piotr Trochowski, Alemannia Aachen forward Jan Schlaudraff and Werder Bremen defender Clemens Fritz, whose chances of seeing action rose with Jansen's injury.

Germany are top of Euro 2008 qualifying Group D after beating Ireland and San Marino in their two games so far.

Loew also called up Robert Enke, the 29-year-old Hanover 96 goalkeeper, for the first of the two games. Enke was in the squad for the Confederations Cup in 1999 in Mexico but has yet to play for Germany.

Missing from the squad are Gerald Asamoah, who suffered a compound leg fracture in Schalke 04's UEFA Cup defeat by Nancy, and Werder Bremen pair Tim Borowski and Mertesacker.

Midfielder Borowski injured his left leg in Werder's 1-1 draw with Barcelona on Wednesday. Mertesacker made his comeback from a heel injury in that match but club coach Thomas Schaaf asked that he be given more time to complete his recovery.

Midfielders Sebastian Kehl and Sebastian Deisler were also ruled out because of long standing injury problems.
