JS passes 6 bills

On the penultimate day of its last session, parliament yesterday passed six bills, including two upgrading madrasa education.

The bills are the Islamic University (Amendment) Bill 2006, the Madrasa Education (Amendment) Bill 2006, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman University Barisal Bill 2006, Rangpur Carmichael University Bill 2006, Sylhet Agricultural University Bill 2006, and the Special Privileges for Convicted Women in Prison Bill 2006.

Education Minister Dr Osman Farruk piloted the bills.

On behalf of Social Welfare Minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, Law Minister Maudud Ahmed moved the Special Privileges for Convicted Women in Prison Bill 2006.

All the bills were passed by voice vote.

Opposition lawmakers censured the government for "deceiving" the people using Islam ahead of elections as Parliament passed the Islamic University (Amendment) Bill and the Madrasah Education (Amendment) Bill.
