"I did not want to be superstar but a super actor" --- Alamgir

Alamgir, who has acted in over 300 films, has won several awards and accolades both at home and abroad. Sitting in his office, over a cup of tea, the veteran actor talked about his transition from films to TV.

According to Alamgir, "In 1995 I decided to take a break from acting. It was almost 25 years ago when I joined the film industry and began my acting career. During the break I got involved in the real estate and garments business. I returned to films with Nargis Akhter's Char Shotiner Ghor. I decided to limit the number of movies I do to just one a year and put this into practice for the next couple of years. Last year I acted in two and this year I'm doing my third film." However, he said that acting was still his passion, be it in films or TV.

Afsana Mimi offered him a role in the 150-episode TV serial, Kachher Manush last year and he could not resist it. When he joined the film industry in 1972, his contemporaries were Zafar Iqbal, Ujjol and Faruq." I did not want to be superstar but a super actor," says Alamgir.

One wonders if he is gradually shifting into direction. He says that he has been directing films since 1985 and so far he has made seven movies. He plans to direct a film next year. At present he is going through the novels and short stories by Syed Shamsul Haque and is sure he will come across something fascinating. So far he has selected Rokto Mangsher Manush.

Dwelling on the subject of the absence of a film institute in the country, Alamgir says, "Behind every such institute in the world is the hand of the government or semi-government organisations." Since there is a Film Development Corporation (FDC) and a Department of Film and Publication (DFP), he says, there can very well be a film institute. His lament is that while the authorities have declared their intention to look into the subject, nothing has been done yet.

Talking about whether there are powerful messages in our films with the advent of talented directors such as Humayun Ahmed and Tareque Masud, Alamgir believes that there have been people like Zahir Raihan, Khan Ataur Rahman, Kamal Ahmed, Dilip Biswas and AJ Mintu whose contributions cannot be understated. For Alamgir a good film is one with a powerful message and the capacity to draw the crowds. "I don't believe in art films: They are parallel films. What good are they if a bulk of people don't see them?" questions Alamgir.

At present Alamgir is busy making Ghorer Lokkhi, a social drama about a bride trying to get adjusted to a new family. The last film that he directed, Nirmom, was also a social drama.

Alamgir made his entry into the film circuit with the encouragement of Alamgir Kumkum with a film on the Liberation War. He has worked with almost all senior directors such as Kamal Ahmed, Dilip Biwas, Khan Ataur Rahman and Subash Dutt. Likewise he has acted with many leading ladies such as Shabana, Bobita, Kobita, Champa and Rozina.
