Financial Crisis In Biman
Employees announce fresh agitation programme today

Officials and employees of Bangladesh Biman will launch a fresh movement to press for their demand for steps to resolve the financial crisis facing the national flag carrier and make it free from corruption.

Biman Sammilito Sangram Parishad, a platform for all ten associations of Biman employees, took the decision on fresh agitation at an emergency meeting yesterday.

"We will again sit in an emergency meeting and declare fresh agitation programme tomorrow (Thursday)," said Bangladesh Airline Pilots' Association General Secretary Captain Mahbub while talking to The Daily Star last night.

"This time we will give ultimatum to the government to meet our demands," he added.

The Parishad leaders also warned that they would enforce an indefinite strike at airports across the country, if needed. They will hold a grand rally on October 10.

The financial crisis in Biman has stirred up resentment among the employees, said a Parishad leader.

Although the government has given some money, but that is not enough to run the Biman efficiently, said Captain Maksud, adding that the employees are yet to get their salary of the last month.

Meeting sources said the officials and employees also discussed ways to make Biman profitable.

They suggested rescheduling Biman routes to minimise the loss.

On September 3, Biman employees called an indefinite strike at all the airports across the country, which was scheduled to begin on September 7, but suspended the strike the next day after State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir assured them of resolving the financial crisis in Biman.
