'No alternative to consensus on electoral reforms'

Jatiya Party Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju yesterday said there is no alternative but to reach a consensus over the opposition's electoral reforms to protect country's democracy and constitution.

"We have got democracy in the country after deposing the autocratic government in 1990. But the country stands in such a position that many fear that will the democratic system exist?" Manju said while addressing the concluding day of the parliament of the BNP-led four-party coalition government.

The JP chairman alleged that many do not want either parliamentary system nor democracy. Even the politicians want to undermine the democracy, Manju added.

He said though country's democracy and constitution has been stumbled repeatedly, they are following the democracy with struggles.

On honest and competent candidates, the JP chairman asked whether they are not competent candidate or they are not elected by people's votes?

On the other hand, giving concluding speech, Krishak Sramik Janata League President Qader Siddiqui heavily came down on the government accusing it for failures to curb skyrocketing prices of essentials.

Referring to police atrocities on the national shooters, Quader said law and order situation in the country has deteriorated in recent days.
