The chief election commissioner (CEC) and the other three election commissioners held a marathon meeting yesterday while the ruling BNP and opposition Awami League (AL) were discussing electoral reforms that include reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC). The meeting that began at 11:00am at the CEC's office lasted for about five hours. It triggered speculations among the EC Secretariat officials whether the commissioners were discussing what they should do if the two parties agree to reconstitute the commission. "We have never seen such a long meeting at the commission without any crucial agenda relating to elections," a senior official at the EC Secretariat said. Election Commissioner Justice Mahfuzur Rahman, however, told reporters that they just chatted and discussed the task of printing the updated voter list. Aziz declined to talk to journalists about the meeting. He also did not reply whether he would resign if the ongoing dialogue reaches a consensus over reconstitution of the EC. Election commissioners Justice Mahfuzur and SM Zakaria were present at the first part of the meeting that continued till 2:00pm. Then the CEC and Justice Mahfuz entered the room of Election Commissioner Hasan Mansur who did not attend the discussion at the CEC's office. Sources said the CEC had sent a massage to Election Commissioner Zakaria, asking him to join them at Mansur's office where the latter part of the meeting went on till 4:00pm.
