Hate the police acts

The country's sports fraternity yesterday came in unison to protest last Monday's brutal police assaults on national shooters and employees of the National Shooting Federation (NSF).Organisers, sportsmen and officials of all sorts took part in the human-chain organised by Sommilito Krira Paribar at Muktangon in the heart of the city. Before the programme began, Club Cup hockey tournament finalists Abahani and Mohammedan held aloft together a banner at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium demanding punishment to the policemen responsible for the horrific beating up. The Muktangon and its adjacent road, stretching from Paltan crossroads to Zero Point, was taken over by people who love and care for sports. The whole national football team was present there along with Sonali Otit Club, Abahani fan club, ex-national footballers and cricketers, shooters who demanded exemplary punishment to the guilty, withdrawal of the case against the shooters and send them abroad for better treatment. The speakers also demanded a judicial inquiry into the barbaric attack, another dark chapter in the country's history of sports. Although NSF president Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury was absent, its vice-president Kashem Humayun welcomed the participants while federation general secretary Nazimuddin Chowdhury spoke on the occasion. Among others, shooters Atiqur Rahman, Abdul Gaffar, Haider Ali, Kazi Shahana Parveen, Sabrina Sultana, Sharmin Akhter, national footballers Alfaz Ahmed and Aminul Haque, ex-national booters Badal Roy, Sheikh Mohammad Aslam, Imtiaz Sultan Johnny, Arif Khan Joy, Dewan Shafiul Arefin Tutul, ex-cricketers Gazi Ashraf Lipu, GS Hassan Tamim, Aliul Islam, ex-cricket board officials Raisuddin Ahmed, Aminul Haque Moni, Ahmed Sajjadul Alam Boby, national cricket coach Jalal Ahmed Chowdhury, Sommilito Sangskriti Jote president and secretary Nasiruddin Yusuf and Golam Kuddus, ex-Bangladesh Football Federation general secretary Harunur Rashid and Sommilito Krira Paribar convenor Mubasshir Hossain spoke on the occasion. A human-chain was also organised in injured Commonwealth Games gold medalist Asif Hossain Khan's hometown Pabna. Asif meanwhile spent another day at hospital along with other four injured shooters, cook and an Ansar member. NSF president Muyeed Chowdhury visited the ailing, but surprisingly State Minister for Youth and Sports Fazlur Rahman has yet to find time to see them. Orthopaedic Surgeon Ziaul Haq, who is in charge of treatment at the Metropolitan Hospital, thought that the shooters needed better treatment for rehabilitation. "We can cure them but we don't have the facilities or any specialists in the country that sportsmen of high level need to recover properly. It would be better if they are sent abroad for proper treatment," the doctor told.
