Ensure quality teachers for quality education

Quality education cannot be ensured in the country without quality teachers, said the speakers at a seminar yesterday.Meritorious students are not eager to have teaching as a career due to poor salary, they added. The seminar was organised to observe the World Teachers Day in the city. The 40th World Teachers' Day was observed throughout 150 countries including Bangladesh with a call to ensure quality teachers for quality education. Different teachers' association celebrated the day through bringing out colourful rallies, arranging discussion and seminars. Bangladesh Shikkhak-Karmachari Oikya Parishad, a platform of eight teachers organisation, organised a seminar where academics said teachers have to think about various effective ways of teaching to improve the students' understanding. "Due to poor salary, country's meritorious students are not eager to have a career in teaching profession, which is the main obstacle for ensuring quality education," said Prof MA Awal Siddiquee, convenor of the Oikya Parishad, while addressing the seminar. He also suggested that the level of primary education should be expanded up to class eight which is needed to help grow basic knowledge among the students. Dr M Akhtaruzzaman, president of Bangladesh College-University Teachers Association, said decision on education system should not be taken considering the political interest. He said recognition of Dawara degree of Qawami madrasa equivalent to master's degree in Islamic Studies or Arabic Literature and Fazil-Kamil equivalent to Bachelor and Master's degree was made only on political consideration on the eve of the coming election. Oikya Parishad leaders Pradip Chakraborti Shahajahan Alam Saju and Abu Bakkar Siddiquee also spoke. Earlier, teachers carrying banners, festoons and placards brought out a colourful procession from the Muktangan that paraded different streets.
