2 RMG workers killed in bus plunge in Savar

Two garment workers were killed and 32 others, mostly female workers, were injured as a bus carrying workers of a garment factory plunged into a ditch at Palashbari on Nabinagar-Kaliakoir highway at Ashulia yesterday.

The accident took place at 6:45 in the morning when the bus full of workers from Starling Creation Ltd were headed out from Kalampur of Dhamrai for the factory at Berun in Yarpur in Savar.

The bus fell into a roadside ditch after its driver lost control of it and hit a truck from behind at Palashbari on the Nabinagar-Kaliakoir highway.

Farida Yasmin, a resident of Ghior in Manikganj, died on the spot while Mamun, 30, son of Abdul Khalek, from Pashchim Pasha of Bhandaria under Pirojpur was announced dead by doctors at Gonoswasthya Hospital (GH).

Among the injured admitted to GH, Sathi, Champa, Roushan Ara, Shilpi, Rina, Nazma, Bakul and Jharna are in critical condition.

Police salvaged the bus at around 11:00am. Traffic on the highway remained suspended for two hours after the accident.

Injured Jharna and Suma alleged, "Though the driver was in the bus, the helper of the bus was driving it. We noticed this only moments before the accident when the bus started fishtailing on the highway hastily as the helper lost control over the wheel."

Moments before hitting the truck, the bus also rammed a roadside van and left its driver Ashraful injured.

Nasirullah, second officer of Ashulia Police Station, confirmed the deaths.

Just a day before, at least 35 people, mostly garment workers, were feared drowned as a bus carrying them plunged into Bangshai River at Shalepur Bridge near Aminbazar.
