Former BNP lawmker among 119 accused in five cases

Five cases have been filed accusing 119 people including former BNP lawmaker Shahidul Islam, his brother and party leader Towhidul Islam and two prospective candidates in connection with the murder of Krishak League (Awami League's peasant front)) leader Basir Uddin in Mirpur upazila on Saturday. Awami League enforced a half-day hartal in Mirpur on Monday protesting the killing. The party leaders however abandoned a programme for rally at the request of the local administration. Of the five cases filed with Mirpur thana on Saturday, two were by Awami League leaders, two by BNP leaders and one by a policeman who was deployed as security of Sahidul Islam. According to police, Ferdous Wahid, president of Mirpur Pouro Awami League, filed a case against 25 BNP leaders and activists including Sahidul Islam and his brother Towhidul Islam, secretary of Bheramara upazila BNP. Mirpur upazila Chhatra League president Mafiul Islam Mafi filed another case accusing 54 BNP men including Sahidul Islam and his brother. Rahmat Ali, organising secretary of Mirpur upazila BNP, filed another case accusing 20 AL leaders and activists including Kushtia AL vice-president and prospective 14-party alliance candidate from Kushtia-2 Mahbubul-Alam Hanif and dissident BNP leader and prospective independent candidate industrialist MA Khaleq. One Abdul Karim filed another case accusing 24 AL and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) leaders and activists including Mahbubul-Alam Hanif for attacking a BNP rally on Saturday. Policeman Torikul Islam, who was deployed as bodyguard of Sahidul, filed another case without naming any accused. In the complaint he said that he along with Shahidul was assaulted by some people on Saturday. Some sources claimed that Sahidul Islam and Towhidul Islam left the area after Saturday's incident.
