Same men reshuffled among top cop posts
6 divisional commissioners also changed

The top posts of the police were reshuffled again yesterday in a span of 24 hours, leaving the same men in important positions.

For example, the DG of Rab has been made the inspector general of police within 48 hours of his appointment to the former post. On the other hand, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief has been put at the helm of Rab. The same CID chief was the commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) only 48 hours earlier.

IGP Anwarul Iqbal has been made an officer on special duty (OSD).

The posts of chief of Special Branch (SB) and DMP commissioner have been swapped within 48 hours. The commissioner, Naim Ahmed, had just joined his new post six hours before his new transfer to a less important posting at SB.

The latest changes show that the people who had allegedly been in good book of the last regime have got even better postings.

Naim had played an important role in arresting Shibir activists accused in the Rajshahi University Prof Taher murder case. Shibir leader Mahbubul Alam Salehi was on the run when Naim was the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) commissioner and Awami League then lauded Naim's role in the case in parliament.

Besides, the interim government also transferred six joint secretaries to the posts of divisional commissioner yesterday.

ABM Bazlur Rahman, additional IGP of Special Branch (SB), has been made DMP commissioner. Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner M Mazedul Haque was made the DIG to the police headquarters.

DMP Additional Commissioner M Moniruzzaman was given the charge of commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police while CMP Additional Commissioner M Moinur Rahman Chowdhury was given the charge of CMP commissioner.

Additional DIG and DMP Joint Commissioner SM Kamal Hossain was made Police Training Centre (PTC) commandant in Rangpur and Chittagong Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Commandant SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman has been made additional inspector general (AIG) at the police headquarters.

Banoj Kumar Mazumder, AIG (Training) police headquarters, has been made APBn commandant of Chittagong.

According to another Bangabhaban press release about the reshuffle in the BCS administration cadre, the transfers and posts were given to the officers as mentioned below:

Mahfuzur Rahman, director general of relief and rehabilitation department was made commissioner of Dhaka Division, Mahfuzul Haq, joint secretary to the education ministry made commissioner of Chittagong, Aziz Hasan, joint secretary to the defence ministry made commissioner of Sylhet, Mokhlesur Rahman, joint secretary to economic relations division made commissioner of Khulna, Bijan Kranti Sarkar, joint secretary to the housing and public works ministry made commissioner of Barisal, and Anisuddin Manjur, joint secretary of civil aviation and tourism ministry made commissioner of Rajshahi Division.

Meanwhile, the contract of BSS Chief Editor and Managing Director Gaziul Hasan Khan was cancelled, BSS reports.

The AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil last night termed the recent changes "meaningless" and a "eyewash".

"Only the privileged ones are being given upgraded posts," he said demanding the professionals be given a chance to work.
