14-party hammers on CG's neutral role

Reiterating its demand for immediate steps to implement the 11-point task to create a congenial atmosphere for holding a free and fair election, the Awami League (AL)-led 14-party combine yesterday said they want to see the caretaker government (CG) perform its duties neutrally.Briefing newsmen at AL's Dhanmondi office, 14-party Coordinator and AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil once again warned that the entire country would be brought to standstill by enforcing blockade programmes if their demands are not met by November 11. Prior to the briefing, the 14-party held a meeting with AL presidium member Tofail Ahmed in the chair. Severely criticising BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's speech at a city rally on Tuesday, Jalil said BNP is conspiring to foil the next general election. Khaleda blasted the council of advisers to the CG for meeting without the chief adviser (CA) and accused them of conspiracy. In a warning to the interim government, the immediate past prime minister said, "Just cooperate with the Election Commission (EC) in holding the upcoming polls. You are not here to implement anyone's political agenda." The AL stalwart demanded immediate withdrawal of Khaleda's speech which, he said, proved that the previous government constituted the EC to implement its political agenda to enable it to come back to power in the next election. When all quarters are demanding reconstitution of the Election Commission to ensure free and fair polls, Khaleda has become doubtful about implementation of her design, Jalil said. This is why she blasted the advisers' council," he said, terming Khaleda's speech 'devoid of political norms'. Sensing that her party would not return to power, the BNP chief now wants confrontations in the country to foil the upcoming election, Jalil said. He called upon the people to foil evil designs of the BNPand its ally Jamaat-e-Islami. The 14-party coordinator alleged Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) MA Aziz has stood against the people and is conspiring to bring BNP-Jamaat to power. He asked Aziz not to push the country towards confrontations, and step down as, he said, two CECs had done in the past in the face of people's demand Jalil urged the CG to withdraw security for the CEC to force him to resign. Alleging that the attorney general is misleading the people through wrong explanation of the constitution as regards the CG, he reiterated the demand for his removal. Bangabhaban officials are obstructing the functioning of the CG, Jalil alleged, again demanding immediate shifting of the CA's office from there to enable him to perform his activities neutrally. He termed the reshuffle in the administration an "eyewash". Jalil demanded transfer of the establishment and home secretaries for their 'controversial activities'. He also demanded contractual appointments of the director general of National Security Intelligence (NSI), Bangladesh Institute of Administrative Management, Chairman of Privatisation Board, Board of Investment, CHT Development Board and Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. Those present at the press briefing included senior 14-party leaders Tofail Ahmed, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Suranjit Sengupta, Matia Chowdhury, Obaidul Quader, Hasanul Haque, Abdul Mannan, Abdur Rahman, Bimal Biswas, Nurul Islam and Dilip Barua. Later Dhaka city 14-party held a rally on Bangabandhu Avenue asking the CG to accept the 11-point demand to avoid a countrywide blockade from November 12. "If our demands are not met by the deadline, the entire country will be besieged and Dhaka will be kept isolated. All highways and rail lines will be barricaded and all ports, including Chittagong and Mongla ports, will be shut down," Jalil told the rally. Accusing the president of acting at the dictate of Khaleda, Jalil asked him to 'derive' strength from 14 crore people of the country.
