14-party Ultimatum
33 transferred SPs asked to stay put
Staff Correspondent
The government yesterday asked all 33 SP (superintendent of police) rank police officials, who were transferred Monday, not to join their new offices before November 12.Sources said the transferred police officials' joining their new offices is depending on turn of political events following the 14-party alliance's November 12 ultimatum given to the caretaker government. The caretaker government transferred the 33 SP-level officials on Monday in a move to reshuffle the police administration that earned flaks from many quarters as cases of the police officials who were deprived during the BNP-led four-party coalition government's tenure were not considered in the reshuffles. Most of the transferred officials served in metropolitan areas or in different districts as SPs and enjoyed favours from the last 4-party alliance government during its tenure. After the recent transfer, they were either promoted or would be holding more or less similar positions in other districts. Those who failed to prove their loyalty to the last government were dumped at Armed Police Battalions, Police Staff College, Police Academy and some other districts where they did not have field activities. Some of the officials loyal to 4-party alliance were transferred as SPs to other districts from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) while others from outside Dhaka were brought in to the capital as deputy commissioners (DCs). Many of such officials include former leaders and cadres of BNP's student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Jamaat-e-Islami's student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir. Many of these officials transferred outside Dhaka include a former Shibir president of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Shibir activist of Dhaka University (DU), general secretary of Amra Ziar Sainik, JCD leader at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and a JCD activist at Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University. Among those who were transferred to Dhaka include a Shibir leader of Chittagong Medical College, two JCD leaders of DU and Chittagong University and a JCD leader of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture College. A former JCD leader of BAU, a JCD activist of DU and a Shibir leader of Islamic University were also transferred.
