EU to send short, long-term poll monitoring teams

The European Union has decided to send long and short-term election observation missions to monitor the coming general election in Bangladesh, seen as the most crucial one in the country's history.Head of delegation Ambassador Dr Stefan Frowein disclosed the plan to reporters after a meeting with immediate past prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Hawa Bhaban yesterday evening. He said the long-term observation mission will arrive here five or six weeks ahead of the elections while the short-term one around the election day. Besides, there will be a core team for coordination. The observation mission will be staying "one or two weeks after the elections," he said. The EU election observation mission will be based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to be signed between the EU and the chief adviser to the caretaker government and the Election Commission. This will be based on documents in the light of the declaration of the United Nations.
