815 SC lawyers protest Nizami's comments on eminent persons

A total of 815 lawyers of Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), in a joint statement, condemned Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami's "offensive and indecent" comments about renowned Jurist Dr Kamal Hossain, Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, Prof Muzaffer Ahmad and Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya.They urged the caretaker government yesterday to take legal measures against the Jamaat leaders and its Amir in order to eliminate their conspiracies against intellectuals and freedom fighters, an SCBA press release said. They also urged people to be aware of the conspiracies and unite in resisting Jamaat's heinous activities. They said, "The Jamaat leaders' "indecent" comments about the leaders of the Liberation War reminds us of their barbaric and cruel deeds in 1971." Bangladesh Bar Council Vice-chairman Rokanuddin Mahmud, former SCBA presidents Shafik Ahmed, Abdul Baset Majumdar, Mahbubey Alam and SCBA members Yusuf Hossain Humayun and Syed Ahmed were among the signatories of the joint statement. On November 5, the Jamaat ameer at a rally gave "indecent and offensive" statements against Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain, Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) Trustee Member Prof Muzaffer Ahmad, Centre for Policy Dialogue Executive Director Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya and SCBA President Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam.
