International Festival of Photography 2006

Photography festival begins today


Chobi Mela IV -- the International Festival of Photography, Bangladesh 2006 begins today. A press conference was held at Drik Gallery yesterday to address the festival.

The festival will take place in Dhaka and will run throughout the month. Most of the renowned galleries in the city including National Museum, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Bengal Gallery, Alliance Francaise, Goethe Institut, Russian Centre for Sciene and Culture and Drik Gallery will be involved in hosting the festival.

The inaugural programme will be held at the National Museum. The festival will be launched with the exhibition "CONTACT/S: 30", a show especially curated for the festival by Contact Press Images. Chobi Mela rally will start today at 3 pm from Bangladesh National Museum.

The festival includes 49 exhibitions featuring works of photographers from 23 countries. Other attractions of the festival include lectures, discussions, films and multimedia presentations. Evening sessions will take place daily from November 9 to 15 at the Goethe Institut Auditorium. Two moving exhibitions (on rickshaw vans) will cover areas including Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Bahadur Shah Park, Sadarghat and Dhaka University. Workshops and portfolio reviews will be held at Pathshala-South Asian Institute of Photography, British Council and Drik.

Two legendary photographers will be honoured by Chobi Mela during the festival for their outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of photography. This year Chobi Mela Lifetime Achievement awards go to Rashid Talukder and Peter Magubane.
