Unb, Dhaka
The government yesterday urged the Awami League (AL)-led 14-party combine to cancel their "unlawful" programme like siege and instead stage peaceful procession and rally in the greater interest of the nation.Terming the planned siege unlawful and unconstitutional, a press note of the Ministry of Home Affairs said the government is determined to take 'all legal measures" to maintain peace and discipline in socioeconomic life and to ensure security of public life and property. In the press note, the government noted that necessary instructions to this effect have already been given to the law-enforcement agencies, including the police. "Such programme like siege will stop supply of essentials for about 1.20 crore people living in Dhaka city and disrupt public life. Particularly, the livelihood of the poor and the working-class people will be difficult for price hike of essentials following the siege programme," it said. The press note further said the siege programme will disrupt transportation of exportable industrial goods and the export process as well as transport of essential agricultural products and Industrial raw materials. Besides, current examinations at different educational institutions will be postponed, posing a threat to students' future. "Moreover, Dhaka will be isolated from the rest of the country during this programme." The authorities urged the political parties to refrain from any unconstitutional programme in order to ensure fundamental rights of all citizens. "The government under no circumstances can allow indiscipline and chaotic situation," the press note said.
