AL to be blamed if blockade hinders polls
Says Bhuiyan

BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan yesterday said Awami League (AL) would be to blame if their blockade programme hindered elections and the democratic process. "The country will move towards uncertainty if the elections are not held," he said at a press conference, which was called for with a short notice at the BNP central office in Naya Paltan. "We don't believe in violence and killings, therefore we will not have any political programmes tomorrow (today)," Bhuiyan said. Bhuiyan urged his party men not to attack unless they were under attack. He also urged AL to shun all violent programmes, attend the upcoming elections and cooperate with the caretaker government in holding the elections. About the AL allegation that BNP-led four-party alliance activists might sabotage AL's programmes, Bhuiyan said the allegation is baseless. "They (AL) want more violence, that is why they brought this kind of allegation against the BNP," he added. On the AL blockade programme, the BNP secretary general questioned the purpose of the agitation programme and said there was no political government in the country. He said the main objective of the present non-political caretaker government is to hold the next general elections. Terming the AL demands impractical, Bhuiyan said their demand for voter ID cards with picture will need three or four years to implement and the demand to remove the portrait of former prime minister Khaleda Zia is funny.
