Staff Correspondent
Around three crore people of the country will be displaced if sea level rises by one metre due to global warming, environmentalists said yesterday.A total of 46 countries would be severely affected by the sea level rise and Bangladesh ranks 2nd among them, they said at a rally organised by Bangladesh Campaign Against Climate Change in the city. They demanded immediate steps to curb emission of greenhouse gas, which causes the global warming, and enforce Kyoto Protocol to offset the climate change. They also demanded use of solar power instead of coal, massive tree plantation in the country and protection of rivers and water bodies. The speakers said rapid urbanisation, destruction of forests, carbon dioxide emissions by factories and vehicles and rampant use of chemicals are responsible for climate change. The country would also face greater risk of natural disasters due to global warming, they said. More than 25 environmental organisations joined the rally in front of the National Museum. Presided over by Nagorik Uddog Chief Executive Zakir Hossain, the rally was addressed by Mohidul Haque Khan of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon, Dr Abdul Matin of Bangladesh Campaign Against Climate Change, architect Iqbal Habib, Dr Nuruddin, Dr Jasmine Ara Sultana and Shabnam Mushtari.
