Ctg port springs to life as lock-down suspended

Full operations of Chittagong Port resumed last night following postponement of the 14-party's countrywide blockade programme.

Delivery of goods from the port and other activities started in full swing, reports received in Dhaka said.

All activities at the country's premier seaport remained suspended for two days-- Sunday and Monday -- due to the blockade, and partial operations resumed Tuesday morning.

Although limited activities at the port continued till yesterday evening, delivery of goods remained suspended till then, leaving around 60 vessels waiting at the outer anchorage, according to sources.

Of the vessels, 16 are container carriers and the rest are general cargo carriers and oil tankers.

Unloading of general cargo, particularly essentials like salt, wheat and sugar and cement was going on as usual last night. Unloading of bulk cargo through inland cargo vessels also continued at the outer anchorage.

But operation of four gantry cranes for handling containers was yet to be started.

Meanwhile, partial operations resumed yesterday at the biggest land port of the country, Benapole, releasing perishable import items. Delivery of goods from the port is likely to start this morning.

Normal activities at all other land ports are also going to resume this morning, reports said.

The blockade for four days left hundreds of trucks loaded with goods stranded on both sides of the border, causing huge losses to exporters and importers of perishable items.

Sources pointed out that in Chittagong it would take several days to clear the unprecedented congestion of containers inside the port yard, crammed with 18,500 twenty equivalent unit (TEU) containers.

Chittagong Port Authority and law enforcers had assured importers of full protection of their cargo during transportation but none came to take delivery of containers or goods from the port during the blockade programme, sources mentioned.
