Hartal greets controversial cop Kohinoor
Non-stop strike threatened in Rangamati

A dawn-to-dusk hartal called by local Awami League protesting the appointment of Deputy Commissioner (Police) Kohinoor Mia as commanding officer of Rangamati was observed in the district town yesterday.

Local Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League and Mohila Awami League brought out processions in the town during the hartal and held rallies at Reserve Bazar, Tobolchhari, Bonrupa and Bhedabhedi in the town.

They also threatened to enforce a nonstop hartal in the district if the appointment of Kahinoor is not cancelled.

Educational institutions and business establishments remained closed and vehicles were off the roads during hartal hours.

Controversial Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Kohinoor Mia, held responsible for Monday's killing of an Awami League (AL) leader, was transferred to Rangamati on Tuesday.

The transfer order came following Kohinoor's order to spray hot water on a peaceful demonstration of blockade supporters at Karwan Bazar in the capital on Monday, leading to a violent clash between police and demonstrators. During the clash, a speeding police van drove through the demonstrators, killing AL leader Waziullah and injuring two others critically.
