New BCB chief takes office

Newly appointed Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Mohammad Abdul Aziz said that he was honoured to be chosen as the chief of the country's most affluent sports body.

The agriculture secretary was introduced to the board officials last evening at the BCB's Gulshan office after Sports Ministry gave him the additional responsibility following the resignation of Ali Asghar from the hot seat on Tuesday.

Signing the lucrative TV deal worth 56.88 million dollars with Nimbus Sports International will be his immediate task, besides successfully completing this month's home series against Zimbabwe.

The top bureaucrat, however, was little bothered with the challenges, as he believed that working together and not solo efforts, which would be more effective.

"I don't know how long I'll stay here but I can assure you that I will continue the ongoing activities. I believe it is teamwork rather than an individual effort. I talked with the general secretary (Mahbubul Anam) about the TV deal and I hope all formalities will be completed within a short time," said Aziz while talking with the reporters in his new office.

"It's a new subject (TV deal) to me but I have had experiences of handling many big financial matters as a top government official. We have to complete the two upcoming home series (Zimbabwe and Scotland) successfully but I also want to put emphasis on the domestic circuit during my tenure at the board," he added.

Aziz will chair the first board meeting on Friday at 6:30pm at a local club where the TV deal is expected to be approved by the Executive Committee.
