Non-govt teachers' hunger strike today

Teachers of non-government high schools, colleges and madrasas will observe a token hunger strike at all districts today and at city's Muktangan on November 19 to press home their demand to cancel the circular of depositing tuition fees to the government fund.

National Front of Teachers and Employees (NFTE), a platform of 11 teachers and employees' organisations, held an emergency central committee meeting at its central office yesterday and decided to observe the token hunger strike.

Education ministry recently issued a circular of 100 per cent basic salary from the government coffer but attached a new condition of depositing tuition fees collected from students to the government fund.

NFTE leaders urged the caretaker government to cancel all contractual appointments in education sector and provide 100 per cent basic salary from the government exchequer for the teachers from 2006-2007 fiscal year instead of 2007-2008.

They also called upon education secretary, director of Bangladesh Institute of Administrative Management (Biam), director general of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), chairman of National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) and vice chancellors of National University and Open University to resign willingly by November 20.
