30 lakh forms sent out for voter roll correction

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday started sending 20 lakh forms to be used to delete the same number of fake or duplicate names from the updated voter list amidst widespread allegations that it contains over one crore excess voters. It also sent 10 lakh forms to be used for inclusion of names in the electoral roll and will send more for inclusion and deletion of names, if needed, sources in the EC Secretariat said. The move was initiated about a month after the caretaker government (CG) first proposed correcting the mistakes on the voter list. The EC however declined to go by the CG's suggestion for consultation with the major political parties seeking their opinion on correcting the voter list and revising the election schedule. In response to this suggestion, the EC on Tuesday informed the council of advisers to the CG that some major parties would not be willing to sit with it in the prevailing political situation, sources said. Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan yesterday urged all leaders and activists of the party and its front organisations to fully cooperate with the EC in correcting the voter list. The council of advisers at the beginning of last month discussed the issue of correcting the controversial updated voter list and proposed to the EC to find ways to do so. But the EC secretary on November 5 informed the CG that it is not possible to correct the mistakes in the list due to time constraints. The advisers again asked the EC to correct the mistakes in the updated voter list following the National Democratic Institute's (NDI) survey report on Saturday revealing that a total of 1.22 crore names on the updated list are either excess or duplicates. The EC in August completed updating the existing voter list and came up with a list having a staggering 9.30 crore voters on it, which triggered a wave of controversy over its correctness. It contained at least 1.28 crore unaccounted voters as per the 2001 census report of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). According to the BBS report, there were 8.02 crore people eligible to be registered as voters. EC Secretariat documents showed that 2,11,63,408 people got themselves listed as voters during the updating while EC officials across the country deleted only 45,08,680 names from the list that contained 7.64 crore voters. Finally, the EC on Tuesday announced that the mistakes in the updated voter list would be corrected in eight days by sending 1.4 lakh staffs door to door from Friday. The field level staffs have been given only three days for detecting fake or duplicate names on the electoral roll.
