Bangladesh kabaddi team finally pulled up their socks to produce a bronze medal in the 15th Asian Games in Doha when they defeated Iran 37-26 in the bronze medal play-off at the Aspire Hall yesterday.Silver medallist in Busan 2002, Bangladesh began the league phase with losses to India and Pakistan and plunged into further abyss following a shocking 56-39 defeat to the unfancied Iran. A victory against Japan in the last match earned them a place in the play off as they finished fourth among five teams and the Bangladeshi kabaddikas took revenge against Iran as well as snatching the bronze with a matured display. The winners, who led the first half 15-9, ended with six lonas. India retained their supremacy in the event clinching gold with a 35-23 win against Pakistan in the final. The Bangladesh chess team got off to a fine start beating Bahrain 2.5-0.5 in the first round of the mixed team classical event. Grandmaster Reefat Bin Sattar defeated FIDE Master Husain Ayyad, Shamima Akhter Liza defeated Aysha Mutaywea while International Master Enamul Hossain Rajib drew with FM Maher Ayyad. Bangladesh finished last in the Group B when the footballers crashed 5-1 to Vietnam at the Al-Arabi Sports Club on Tuesday night. Vietnam's massive win was too late, placing them third in the group with three points. They however, went out in style with Thanh Binh Phan scoring a hattrick. After 3-0 and 5-1 losses to mighty South Korea and Bahrain respectively, Bangladesh raised their hopes to return home with some distinction when they held Vietnam 1-1 at the break. Phan opened the account after 13 minutes from a rebound but Bangladesh midfielder Matiur Munna levelled four minutes from the breather when he shot on a freekick by centre-back Rajani to find the net. Bangladesh received a blow in the first-half stoppage time when Rajani was injured and his replacement, fullback Siraji, was not impressive in the central defence. And Vietnam put early pressure in the second-half to strike twice inside two minutes, in the 47th and 49th, through Phan who put the result beyond the opposition with his treble. Le Cong Vinh Le and Le Tan Tai also netted for the victors in the 72nd and 76th minutes respectively. After their third consecutive defeat in Doha, team leader and Bangladesh Football Federation vice-president Sirajul Islam Bachchu said: "Vietnam had more speed and power than us. We lost because of silly mistakes. Our main central defender Rajani went off injured at half-time and the substitution (Siraji) was not that good." Also on Tuesday, Uzbekistan and Korea progressed to the quarterfinals. Uzbekistan beat Jordan 3-1 at the Al-Gharrafa Stadium for their third successive victory in the tournament to head Group A with maximum nine points. In Group B, Korea's 1-0 victory over Bahrain at the Al-Rayyan Football Stadium set a new Asian Games record for clean sheets. It was the seventh successive match in the men's main tournament where they have not conceded. The last time a team scored against them was when Korea defeated Oman 5-2 at Busan 2002. The previous record was six, held by Iraq, which they achieved from 1982 through to 1986. Bahrain have six points and were kept waited to know whether they are one of the two best runners-ups to qualify for the quarterfinals.
