8th National Cricket League
Sylhet win at last

Sylhet picked up their first win of the season when they beat Dhaka by 90 runs in the fifth round of the Ispahani Mirzapore Tea 8th National Cricket League at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium yesterday.

National discard Alok Kapali was adjudged man-of-the-match for his superb 173 and three wickets with his leg-breaks that folded Dhaka's second innings for 189 on the fourth and the final day.

Dhaka were displaced by Rajshahi at the top of the points table halfway through the race.

Away in Khulna, the game between the hosts and Chittagong as predicted petered out to a draw with Khulna bagging four points by virtue of their first-innings lead.

This was the final round before the first-class competition goes into a break. The National League will resume after the Dhaka Premier League.

Dhaka V Sylhet
Needing 203 runs with six wickets in hand on the fourth and the final day, Dhaka had two in-form batsmen at the crease in Marshall Ayub and Nadif Chowdhury but both failed to deliver for the hosts after resuming on 77-4.

Marshall fell to the swing of Hasibul Hossain, the veteran who bowled with a lot of effort on the day, for only 23. His overnight batting partner Nadif, resuming on six, had added 15 runs when he failed to muster the left-arm spin of Nabil Samad, who also took the wicket of Uttam Sarkar.

Dhaka slipped to further trouble at 127-7 but all-rounder Mohammad Sharif provided some resistance scoring 43. He struck eight boundaries in his 95-minute stay at the crease.

Hasibul, who took four wickets, appropriately mopped the tail, removing the stumps of Anwar Monir for a duck.

Dhaka's loss pushed them back to second place while Sylhet climbed from the bottom of the table.

Khulna V Chittagong
Resuming on 48-1, Gazi Salahuddin lost his overnight partner Elias Sunny early on the day at the Bir Shresththa Shaheed Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium. Nightwatchman Sunny scored only four runs before being bowled out by seamer Ziaur Rahman.

But Tamim Iqbal joined Salahuddin and added further 82 for the third wicket that took the visitors to 260-7 at close of play. Tamim typically smashed his way to 54 but Salahuddin matched him stroke for stroke, hitting seven fours and a six in his 71.

Later on, wicketkeeper-batsman Dhiman Ghosh continued his rich vein of form, remaining unbeaten on 67, smashing eight boundaries and a six.
