Homage to Matter: A garden by Hamiduzzaman Khan

The sculptures placed in the open space at British Council premises communicate with other natural elements of the surroundings. Beginning on December 2, the 20-day exhibition of 18 brand new garden décors by eminent sculptor Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan are on display.

Sometimes his works show the manifestation of a tree or a creature blossoming in a certain motion or rhythm. And the colours used for the abstract sculptures -- orange, black, red, yellow and natural stainless steel -- create a dramatic contrast against the background of greenery.

By bending and twisting the materials, Hamiduzzaman has endowed the sculptures with a certain rhythmic motion, which successfully transforms the metal sheet into a specific form and establishes the formula of metamorphosis. In the case of stone and stainless steel, the sculptor's aim is to recreate the natural expressions of the mediums rather than the forms. Different geometrical shapes -- angular, diagonal and vertical forms -- implemented by him add a motion to the sculptures. Through the transformation of the metal sheets, Hamiduzzaman has given a form to use to the abstract reflections of his mind and has used materials to pay 'homage to matter'.

Commenting on the reason behind using the colour orange on steel sheets in a few of his works such as Form and Space series as well as in Nature and others, the expressionist sculptor said, The colours used on the materials in my sculptures serve two purposes -- to express the essence of the materials used as well as for symbolism. I'm an admirer of Buddhist philosophy, in which orange represents purity. I've used the colour to portray the 'holiness' or peace in nature.

Natureis a wonderful garden décor. Using a stainless steel pipe, he has created the replica of three trees with five petals each. And the orange acrylic colour used for the sculpture has given it uniqueness in the midst of greenery.

In the Organic Form series, one of his latest ventures at the exhibition, the combination of black colour with vast rough base captures the essence of a pre historic statuette -- Totemic belief.

Glassy texture of stainless steel made sculptures such as Speed, Seated Mother and Portrait and others attract the viewers.

In Speed, Hamiduzzaman has created an abstract figure of a bird, which represents the spirit, as well as the natural beauty of birds. Seated Woman is a huge abstract figure of a woman.
