Tamim starts the party

If Twenty20 cricket is all about hitting the ball as hard as you can, then this slam-bang version of the game got off to a searing start this season with opener Tamim Iqbal smashing a superb 67, powering defending champions Old DOHS to a 96-run victory over a listless Partex in the opening match of the Kai Altech Premier Division Twenty20 League at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Tamim was at his pyrotechnical best during the hellacious 116-run opening stand he shared with Mehrab Hossain in only 12 overs. Partex never recovered and after Old DOHS piled up 184 for seven, they were bowled out for 84 in 19 overs.

Giants Abahani and Moha-mmedan both won but in contrasting fashions and it was also a happy outing for runners-up Sonargaon Cricketers, Victoria and Bangladesh Biman in different venues of the city.

Today's matches will be bodily-shifted due to the hartal and will be held tomorrow.

Dohs V Partex
Partex looked completely out of place with their seemingly unfit side caught in the cold as man-of-the-match Tamim smashed every bowler in sight. He struck three huge sixes and nine boundaries in his 41-ball 67. He was aided by Mehrab's run-a-ball 53 and the rest of the batsmen threw their bat around.

All-rounder Neeyamur Rashid and Aslam Ali scored 17 each as Partex were wrapped up for 84 runs in 19 overs. Tigers paceman Shahadat Hossain took two wickets for only eight runs as Old DOHS were off to a perfect start to this season's campaign.

Pegasus V Sonargaon
Wily all-rounder Mohammad Rafique scalped three wickets as last year's surprise package Sonargaon Cricketers romped to a 7-wicket win over promoted Young Pegasus at the BKSP ground.

Apart from Rafique, it was another all-rounder Mohammad Sharif who starred with the ball, taking two wickets.

In-form batsman Marshall Ayub blazed in a 23-ball half-century that included five sixes and four boundaries as Sonargaon Cricketers rattled to their target of 120 runs in only 14 overs.

Mohammedan V Indira Road
Tapash Baisya sparkled both with the bat and ball as giants Mohammedan struggled to get past a modest 118 set by lowly Indira Road in the afternoon match at the DCS.

Al Mamun scored a run-a-ball 26 as Tapash picked two wickets to restrict Indira Road.

Mohammedan lost wickets at regular intervals and it was only Aftab Ahmed and later Tapash who held the fort for them. Aftab struck three boundaries to score 30.

Abahani V Brothers
Two new-look sides were up for a battle but Abahani's superb pace-attack ripped Brothers Union apart as they won by six wickets at the other BKSP ground.

Mashrafee Bin Mortuza, top wicket-taker in international cricket this year, grabbed a couple while Ziaur Rahman and Mohammad Shahjada also were among wickets as Brothers skittled out for 71.

In reply, Abahani eased past the target in 16.4 overs despite a painstaking six not out off 33 balls by skipper Khaled Mashud. Nazimuddin top-scored with 21 but it was a total struggle for Brothers as the overhaul with 14 new players took a beating at the hands of this season's top cash-spenders.

Biman V City
Tigers all-rounder Forhad Hossain stroked a 26-ball half-century while young batsman Rakibul Hasan missed a fifty by a run as Biman won by 56 runs against City Club.

Put into bat first, Biman scored 164 for six in 20 overs but City Club were shot out for only 108 runs in 19.4 overs.

Forhad also starred with the ball as he picked two wickets and was adjudged the man-of-the-match.

Victoria V Kalabagan
Rashedul Islam claimed five wickets but his side Kalabagan were trampled by Victoria who won by 60 runs. Hasanuzzaman struck two sixes and three boundaries in his 25-ball 40.

Kalabagan never seemed to gather any pace in their chase of 158 and were duly bowled out for 97 in 17.2 overs. Left-armer Saqlain Sajib took three wickets for the winners.
